South Bali to Transformed with Funding for Development of Strategic Tourism Areas

At a tourism forum held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the Bali Tourism Board, the director general for tourism destination development, Firmansyah Rahim revealed that the Ministry of Tourism and the Creative Economy will disburse Rp. 200 billion (US$17.4 million to develop tourism facilities in Sanur, Nusa Dua and Kuta.The Bali Daily (The Jakarta Post) reports that the improvements along Sanur Beach would cost Rp. 15 billion (US$1.3 million) with Rp. 5 billion from the Ministry and Rp. 10 billion from the Denpasar municipal budget. These funds would be used initially on improving Sanur's Mertasari Beach area. Three areas of Bali have been designated by the government as Strategic National Tourism Areas (KSPN). 'This [KSPN] is a huge project and what we're doing here is just a small part of it. The budget allocated for this project is enormous. The three areas alone will require Rp 200 billion and more are needed for other destinations,' said Firmansyah. Government plans call for improvement projects to be undertaken in 88 different locations across the Nation, 11 of which are located on the island of Bali. In Sanur the project will be implemented gradually over three areas: Kesiman Petilan, for cultural tourism; Sanur Kaja and Sanur Kauh, for beach-based and village-based tourism; and Serangan as a conservation and marine area. Kuta has also been divided into three distinct sections: Cemagi-Munggu, Pererenan-Canggu and Tibubeneng-Kerobokan for sunset beach and farming projects; Kerobokan Kelod, Seminyak, Legian and Kuta - all as beach, entertainment and shopping destinations; and Tuban and Kedonganan for seafood and mangrove ecotourism. Nusa Dua is divided in five areas: Tanjung Benoa, Terora and Samuh for marine and ecotourism; the Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) area and Peminge for meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions (MICE). ; Kampial, Sawangan and Kutuh for marine operations and beaches; Ungasan and Pecatu beaches; and Jimbaran. 'We have researched the potential of each area and planned what we will do there,' said Firmansyah. Other areas designated as strategic tourism areas salted for development include: Komodo island, Tennger (East Java), Tana Toraja and the Thousand Islands (Jakarta). A member of the Sanur Development Foundation said plans in Sanur would create a jogging track, parking lots and bicycle paths.
